Company History
Our founders understood and appreciated the flexibility, versatility and control offered by a private foundation but wanted to avoid its pitfalls—namely the often-complex process of formation and operation, and the need for staff and infrastructure. In searching for a provider dedicated to the professional management of private foundations, they only found software designed for larger, professionally staffed foundations. Unable to find a company that could simplify and automate the running of private foundations, Foundation Source was born.
Foundation Source made its official market debut in December 2002, by offering the philanthropic community something truly revolutionary: a full complement of back-office, online and advisory services designed to automate and simplify foundation management— and do so at a fraction of the cost. That year, the company signed on its first foundation client and has grown steadily ever since, topping $1.0 billion in foundation assets under administration in 2005, and over $4.0 billion today. The company currently serves over 900 private foundations with endowments ranging from $250,000 to $500 million. Last year, Foundation Source helped administer over $240 million in grants to over 9,000 charities worldwide.
Over the years, Foundation Source has continually expanded its services to meet the needs of its many and diverse foundation clients. In addition to its “core” administrative, online and advisory services, today the company offers optional advanced services and technology to support its clients’ operational, grants management and philanthropic advisory needs.
In 2007, Foundation Source was honored as the “Philanthropic Group of the Year” by Private Asset Management magazine.
The company has formed successful partnerships with many of the nation’s leading private wealth advisory firms, including Atlantic Trust, JPMorgan Private Client Services, Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management, Northern Trust, TD Ameritrade, UBS, Wilmington Trust, and other leading national and regional wealth advisory firms. Foundation Source also works closely with leading law firms and attorneys to form new foundations and support clients’ ongoing philanthropic needs.
Foundation Source is headquartered in Fairfield, Connecticut and maintains regional offices in major cities across the United States.
