In our study, smaller foundations’ grants were approximately $9,000, while mid-size foundations had an average of $24,000 and large foundations had an average of $61,000.
Did you give more than the 5% Minimum Distribution Requirement (MDR)?
Overall, foundations gave an average of 7.2% of their assets, 2.2% more than required by the IRS. Smaller foundations gave an average of 8.9% of their assets, mid-size gave 6.4% and large foundations gave 7.1%
Which charitable sector did you give to the most?
The foundations in our study gave 21.1% to education, making it the largest charitable sector. Following education were Human Services (14.5%), Public/Societal Benefit (14.9%), and Arts, Culture and Humanities (7.4%). See the rest of the rankings.
Where did you focus your charitable giving?
In our study, foundations made more grants domestically than internationally. The average grant size was $21,613 for non-US grants and $74,712 for non-US grants.
When did you make the most grants?
If you’re like most foundations, you focused most of your giving in the last two months of the year. In 2020 and 2021, approximately one-third of all grants were awarded in November and December.
