Earlier this year, we caught up with The Technology Association of Grantmakers (TAG) to explore the key findings from their latest grantmaking organization survey of more than 350 foundations—and what it revealed about philanthropy technology (PhilTech). TAG’s President & CEO Jean Westrick gave us an inside scoop that their upcoming biennial State of Philanthropy Tech Survey would include “the most comprehensive look at philanthropy technology practices, strategies, and resources.” With the recent launch of the 2026 TAG State of Philanthropy Tech Survey, grantmaking organizations who are interested in participating will have the opportunity to review comprehensive survey results to help them plan for future investments and IT needs.

As we’ve often explored here at Foundation Source, we’ve seen a transformational shift in PhilTech that’s providing support for the philanthropic sector in myriad ways including:

  • AI-assisted research and service opportunities as well as platforms that allow donors to collaborate in real-time to support their causes more effectively
  • Technology that empowers nonprofits to operate and fundraise more efficiently
  • Digital grantmaking tools that help professional wealth advisors enhance their clients’ financial and estate planning through strategic giving

About The Survey
Every two years, TAG conducts the State of Philanthropy Tech (SOPT) Survey, the field’s most comprehensive look at how grantmakers are using, managing, and resourcing technology today.

The 2026 survey explores key areas including technology investment, systems and infrastructure, data and artificial intelligence (AI), and digital risk management. It provides a sector-wide view of current practices, organizational capacity, and emerging priorities, equipping leaders to make more informed decisions about staffing, governance, investment, and innovation.

By participating, you contribute to a shared dataset that strengthens peer learning, supports field-wide capacity building, and helps shape the future of philanthropy technology. View the results of the 2024 State of Philanthropy Tech (SOPT) Survey.

The survey is made possible through the exclusive support of  Grantbook.

“Any organization that completes the survey will get access to the full results — you don’t need to be a TAG member to receive the data.” said Jean. “SoPT is the only survey of its kind for our sector. When I worked at a foundation, the results were very helpful to inform our own IT initiatives. I have heard from other technology professionals, who like me, used the data to make the case for greater investments at the leadership level. TAG uses this survey to inform our programming, too. Where we see gaps, we aim to deliver programs and resources to address sector needs.”
