Day 02
Expert Tip: Create or Revisit Your Mission Statement
Get out the whiteboard (or computer), some comfort food and drink, and brainstorm together as a family to either create your mission statement or refine your existing one. We have noticed on our Impactfully platform that those who create compelling and thoughtful mission statements are those who make the most grants. Why? Creating a mission statement does the following:
- Creates the identity of your foundation, which helps drive thoughtful decision making when giving to charities.
- Rallies all members behind a common purpose that every family member is connected to.
- Provides a guide for the foundation’s unique culture and environment that helps guide your giving.
- Gives each family member a purpose and role in the foundation, improving engagement and helping family members see the positive impact of their giving.
- Builds closeness and community around a common cause. Imagine every holiday or family time spent discussing how each member is impacting the world through its mission.
- Creates a vision of the future. For example, if your mission is to fight childhood hunger, your family can envision what the world would be like as you help to solve this problem. The vision of no child being hungry creates excitement and passion.
- Helps frame every giving decision around the mission and the problem the foundation is trying to solve.
Creating a compelling mission statement takes time and is sometimes challenging, but I can guarantee you the bonds that will be created during the process are priceless.
