What Is Grants Management?
Grants management is the end-to-end process by which a foundation accepts applications for grants; then organizes, reviews, and tracks those requests; makes decisions on whether to provide funding; and finally evaluates the effectiveness of the grant awarded.
The IRS has specific regulations around private foundations and their granting activities. For example, private foundations are required to distribute a minimum of 5% of the previous year’s net average assets annually. And, before making a grant, private foundations need to verify that their potential grantees are in good standing with the IRS as tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) public charities. Finally, all of the grants a foundation makes must be recorded and reported on the foundation’s annual tax return.

Foundation Source Annual Report on Grantmaking
We issue our Annual Report on Grantmaking as part of our effort to elucidate the behavior of foundations that, like most of our clients, hold assets of less than $50 million. Foundations of this size represent 98% of all private foundations in the U.S.
The report provides a rare opportunity for private foundations to benchmark their own grantmaking activity. We report how much our clients give as a percent of their assets (broken out by size), where they concentrated their giving, the popularity of “alternative donations,” such as gifts to individuals, and the timing of their grants.
Unlike the majority of foundation research, the data for this report are sourced from the actual transactions of our clients’ foundations, making it a highly reliable and up-to-date resource for the philanthropic community.
